JULY 15

1912

Sports clothing often predicts the future of fashion, introducing high-tech materials and aerodynamic silhouettes that only much later appear in everyday dress. When women competed in swimming events for the first time at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, the British team won the four-hundred-meter relay wearing one-piece wool bathing suits adorned with the Union Jack. The athletes were obviously uncomfortable being photographed in their skimpy suits, which became clingy and transparent when wet; photos of their opponents reveal similarly protective postures. Their reticence is not surprising considering that the woman standing behind the swimmers are dressed in what was, at the time, conventional daywear, with a high neckline, long sleeves, corset, ankle-length skirt, and boots.
